Solar charge controllers often operate for long periods under high load, particularly in off-grid installations where harvesting every available watt of solar power is important. As operating temperatures increase, electronic components are placed under additional stress, which may affect efficiency and long-term reliability.
This project was designed to support the passive cooling system of Victron MPPT charge controllers by providing direct airflow across the heatsink. The aim is not to replace the original cooling design, but to enhance heat dissipation and help maintain lower operating temperatures during demanding conditions.
The cooling system is fully off-grid and does not require an external power supply. It can be connected directly to 12V, 24V, or 48V battery systems, making it suitable for a wide range of solar installations.
To maximise efficiency and minimise unnecessary power consumption, the system incorporates temperature-based fan control. Cooling performance automatically adjusts according to operating conditions, increasing airflow when required and reducing fan activity when temperatures are lower.
Direct airflow over the MPPT heatsink helps remove excess heat more effectively than passive cooling alone. Lower operating temperatures can contribute to improved performance, reduced thermal stress on internal components, and a lower risk of temperature-related failures over time.
